Det blåser en vind från vårt grannland i öst, vinden av klassiskt finskt vemod. HIM gör det på ett poppigt vis, The 69 Eyes med ett rockigt sväng och Sentenced gjorde det en gång i tiden – innan de bestämde sig för att avliva bandet. Personligen har jag alltid tyckt att Amorphis har varit både intressantare och bättre än sina landsmän. Anledningen till detta är att Amorphis har en förmåga att glida mellan gotiska tongångar och ett mer dödsinspirerat sound. Circle är inget undantag.
I några av låtarna, som exempelvis Shades Of Gray och Nightbird’s Song, visar Amorphis en hårdare, grymmare sida som på de senaste släppen har varit som bortblåst. En sida där Tomi Joutsen’s growl verkligen kommer väl till pass. Å andra sidan har vi också det gotiska, vemodiga och vackra, som vi skämdes bort med på albumet Skyforger för några år sedan, i form av Mission och The Wanderer, vars refräng kan vara årets hittills bästa. Som bäst och som mest intressant blir det kanske i Narrow Path, som med sina inslag av folkmusik både överraskar och imponerar.
Circle är också den första skivan sedan 2003 års Far from the Sun där bandet inte hämtat inspiration till texterna från de finska mytologierna i Kalevala. Här har bandet istället satsat på en egenskriven berättelse, som dock bär tydliga mytologiska drag. Detta gör att Amorphis har kunnat ge liv åt berättelsen och göra den mer levande än vad man kanske är van vid. Dessutom är produktionen av Peter Tägtgren klanderfri.
Det finns några band som alltid levererar. När jag låtit Circle gå några varv så kan jag med glädje säga att Amorphis fortfarande gör det. Att skivan bara är nio låtar lång kan kanske avskräcka, men kom då ihåg att dessa både är längre och mer invecklade än vad de varit under framförallt Skyforger och The Beginning of Times. Detta innebär ju dock också att direkta hittar som Silver Bride och Mermaid lyser med sin frånvaro. Men efter ett par varv så sitter många av melodierna på Circle också, likaså merparten av skivans refränger.
Bäst: Modet att plocka tillbaka tyngden från gruppens tidiga karriär som ett element.
Sämst: Att skivan inte sätter sig lika snabbt som exempelvis Skyforger och The Beginning of Times.

A wind is coming from our neighbor in the east. This wind consists of classic Finnish melancholy. The same spirit as HIM delivers with their pop-style, The 69 Eyes with their goth rock and as Sentenced also gave us, before they decided to kill the band. Personally, I have always thought that Amorphis has been both more interesting and better than their colleagues. The reason is that Amorphis has the ability to mix the gothic tone and the more death metal-inspired sound. Circle is no exception.
In some of the songs, such as Shades Of Gray and NightBird’s Song, Amorphis shows a harder, rawer side that has been absent on their latest releases. This side of Amorphis is where Tomi Joutsen’s growl is really in it’s right element. On the other hand we also have the gothic, melancholy and beautiful, the part of this band we were spoiled badly with on the album Skyforger(2009), in the form of Mission and The Wanderer – the later one’s chorus might be this year’s best so far. The peak of the album and the most interesting song is Narrow Path, it’s flirts folk music both surprises and impresses.
Circle is also the first album since the 2003’s Far from the Sun, where the band is not writing about the Finnish mythology of Kalevala. Here, the band has written their own story, which of course bears clear mythological traits but allows Amorphis to be able to give life to the story and make it even more vibrant than we are used to. As always, the production part by Peter Tägtgren is perfect.
There are a few bands that always delivers. After I let Circle spin a few times, I can happily say that Amorphis still does. The album is only nine songs long, perhaps discouraging, but remember that they are both longer and more complex than the songs on said Skyforger and The Beginning of Times. This means, however, that the easy-listen-to hits like Silver Bride and Mermaid is absent. But after a couple of turns a lot of the songs on Circle sticks in your head, also do most of the records choruses.
Best: The courage to add the weight from an earlier Amorphis back.
Worst: The album is not as easily accessed as Skyforger and The Beginning of Times.
