Efter tre års frånvaro är Escape The Fate (äntligen?) tillbaka med sitt nya album Ungrateful, vilket är nummer fyra i ordningen. Bandet har hunnit byta både medlemmar och bolag under inspelningstiden.
Ungrateful är en mix av This War Is Ours och det självbetitlade albumet från 2010, nämligen ett mer melodiskt post-hardcore ljud och lite mer mainstream radiovänlig rock.
Albumets första låt och singel Ungrateful fick en hel del fans att tappa hakan, men även att sukta efter mer. Den går ut riktigt hårt från första hundradelssekunden där Craig Mabbitt leverar starkt med sin aggressiva röst. Det är först nu jag får upp öronen för honom, han har utvecklats abnormt mycket sedan det självbetitlade albumet. Bröderna Monte och Michael Money avlöser grymma riff och samspelet mellan dem är riktigt bra.
Budskapet i låten är ett ständigt problem i dagens samhälle, mobbning. Här finns ingen glädje och allt slutar olyckligt. De flesta låtarna på Ungrateful är djupa och genuina, speciellt texterna där Mabbitt har tagit inspiration från sig själv samt sin omgivning.
Albumet når sin topp ganska tidigt i form av Live Fast, Die Beautiful som verkligen sticker ut ur mängden. Mabbitt gräver djupt och personligt och kommer fram till textraderna: “Just like some fucked up version of Marilyn Monroe, did daddy not love you?” och “Girl, you’re getting nowhere, tryin’ to use my fame.” Temat fortsätter i nästa låt Forget About Me som består av en del snygga breakdowns och element av pop. Refrängen är medryckande och detta lär både bli en framtida radio- och livehit.
Albumets andra singel You’re Insane fortsätter den kommersiella vägen med en arenarock-aktig refräng.
Chemical Love tar ner tempot en aning och går sedan in i albumets enda emotionella ”ballad”, Picture Perfect.
Efter en grym start blir det ganska fort tråkigt och enformigt, speciellt under de fyra sista låtarna Risk It All, Desire, One For The Money och Fire It Up. Det finns varken något djup eller teknikalitet som i de sju första låtarna, och även texterna är medelmåttiga. De känns mer som utfyllnadslåtar.
Ungrateful är Escape The Fate’s bästa alster till dags dato och visar ett band som mognat till sig rejält, både musikaliskt och textmässigt. Visst, de må fortfarande vara radiovänlig mainstreamrock, men ibland kan även det vara behövligt.

After three years of absence Escape The Fate (finally?) returns with their new album Ungrateful, which is number four in the order. The band has had time to change both members and label during the recording time.
Ungrateful is a mix of This War Is Ours and the self-titled album from 2010, namely a more melodic post-hardcore sound and a little more mainstream radio friendly rock.
The album’s first song and single Ungrateful got a lot of fans jaw-dropping but also to long for more. It goes out really hard from the first hundredth of a second where Craig Mabbitt delivers really good with his aggressive and strong voice. He has developed abnormally since the self-titled album. The brothers Monte and Michael Money give us ferocious riffs and the interplay between them is really good.
The message of the song is a persistent problem in today’s society – bullying. There is no joy and everything ends unhappily, most of the songs on Ungrateful are deep and genuine, especially in the texts where Mabbitt has taken inspiration from himself and his environment.
The album reaches its peak fairly early in the form of Live Fast, Die Beautiful which stands out from the rest of the songs. Mabbitt digs deep and personal and comes out with this: ”Just like some fucked up version of Marilyn Monroe, did daddy not love you?” and ”Girl, you’re getting nowhere, tryin’ to use my fame.” The theme continues in the next song Forget About Me, consisting of some neat breakdowns and elements of pop. The refrain is catchy and this will surely be a future radio and live hit.
The album’s second single You’re Insane continues down the commercial route with an arena rock-like chorus.
Chemical Love lowers the tempo a bit and then goes into the album’s only emotional ”ballad,” Picture Perfect.
After an awesome start the album becomes boring and monotonous really fast, especially during the last four songs Risk It All, Desire, One For The Money, and Fire It Up. There isn’t any depth or technicality like in the first seven songs and even the lyrics are mediocre. They feel more like filler songs.
Ungrateful is Escape The Fate’s best album to date, and it shows a band that has matured, both musically and lyrically. Sure, they may still be radio-friendly mainstream rock but sometimes we need that too.
