Med solsken kommer DevilDriver, eller är det tvärtom?
Klockan är 13.30 denna första festivaldag, solen gömmer sig bakom mörka moln och jag spår tyvärr en regnig dag. Ack så fel jag har, ty så fort introt till End Of The Line körs igång måste vädergudarna ha blivit tillfredsställda. När bandet kommer ut på scen, med en väldigt energirik Dez Fafara, spricker solen fram genom de mörka molnen.
Who Torched Cinderella? må ha varit först ut på Metaltown 2012, men det är DevilDriver som kickar igång festivalen på allvar och sätter ribban högt för nästkommande band.
Som jag skrev innan startar de konserten med den alltid lika hårda End Of The Line, för att sedan direkt köra igång Horn Of Betrayal och Head On To Heartache. Behöver jag säga att ingen i publiken står still?
Fafara är i väldigt god form denna tidiga eftermiddag, hans röst är hård, mörk och framförallt riktigt stark. Mellansnacket är sympatiskt, Fafara förklarar hur tacksam han är över att att så många har kommit hit denna tidiga timme och chansen att få spela i Sverige tillsammans med resten av festivalens stora namn.
Det finns några negativa saker med konserten, för det första är speltiden endast på 45 minuter (som går alldeles för fort) – men är det festival så är det.
Den andra är två av DevilDrivers bästa låtar, Hold Back The Day och Not All Who Wanders Are Lost.
Fafaras röst börjar spricka i growlet och det blir mest taskiga kareokeversioner av låtarna.
Inför sista låten säger Fafara till publiken, ”Open the pit, don’t make me yell at you!”. Publiken gör sig redo, bildar en cirkel och man kan riktigt se hur taggade vissa är när de står där och laddar till max.
Tonerna till Clouds Over Californa körs igång och publiken springer mot varandra likt en mildare wall of death. För övrigt är låten så bra live att man glömmer bort de två föregående missarna.
Jag har sett fram emot att få se DevilDriver ända sedan debuten 2003 och jag är väldigt nöjd med konserten. De andra banden får svårt att toppa detta.
Bäst: Clouds Over California och I Could Care Less.
Sämst: Hold Back The Day, Not All Who Wonder Are Lost och den alltför korta speltiden på 45 minuter.
Betyg: 9/10

LIVE: DevilDriver at Metaltown • Gothenburg

With sunshine comes DevilDriver, or is it vice versa?
The time is 13:30 this first day of Metaltown. The sun is hiding behind dark clouds and I predict a rainy day.
I couldn’t be more wrong, as soon as the intro to End Of The Line starts, the weather Gods must have been satisfied cause when the band comes out on stage, with a very energetic Dez Fafara, the sun is bursting through the dark clouds.
Who Torched Cinderella? may have been first out on Metaltown 2012 but it’s DevilDriver who really kicks off the festival and sets the bar high for the coming bands.
As I wrote before, they start the concert with the tough End Of The Line and then immediately into Horn Of Betrayal and Head On To Heartache. Need I say that no one in the audience is standing still?
Fafara is in a very good shape this early afternoon. His voice is harsh, dark and above all really strong. Fafara explains how grateful he is that so many have come here at this early hour, and that they’re given the chance to play in Sweden along with the rest of the festival’s big names.
There are some negative things about the concert, firstly the playing time is only 45 minutes (over too fast). The other negative things are two of DevilDriver’s best songs: Hold Back The Day and Not All Who Wander Are Lost, where Fafara’s voice begins to crack and the songs become poor kareoke versions.
Before the last song, Fafara says to the audience: ”Open the pit, do not make me yell at you”. The crowd is getting ready to form a circle and you can really see how excited some people are as they stand there anticipating the pain.
The notes to Clouds Over Californa kick in and the crowd runs towards each other like a milder wall of death.
Fortunately, the song is so good live that you forget the two previous misses. I’ve been looking forward to seeing DevilDriver ever since their debut in 2003, and I am very pleased with the concert.
Best: Clouds Over California and I Could Care Less.
Worst: Hold Back The Day, Not All Who Wonder Are Lost and the short playing time.
