As I Lay Dying
(Metal Blade Records)
As I Lay Dying är en liveakt som alltid har lyckats imponera på mig. Det ligger många timmar i replokalen bakom bandets förmåga att spela så oerhört tight. Denna kväll bråkar man dock med ett struligt ljud, vilket gör att Nick Hipas melodier stundtals försvinner och det enda vi hör i gitarrväg är Phil Sgrossos kompgitarr. Minst sagt förvirrande.
Detta band har dessutom självaste Hulken på sång i form av suveräna Tim Lambesis, styrkan som han besitter bara i sina vältränade armar räcker lätt till att leda publiken dit han vill med minsta handrörelse.
Redan från start har detta San Diego-baserade band publiken med sig och på grund av sin något korta speltid (ca. 45 minuter) så fokuserar man på de mer kända låtarna. 94 Hours är som alltid en hit och avlutande The Sound of Truth får publiken att bryta ut i allsång.
Energiknippet Within Destruction är en personlig favorit som alltid är välkommen i gruppens setlist.
De enda låtarna som inte riktigt fungerar lika bra är de från As I Lay Dyings två senaste släpp.
Det som håller bandet tillbaka är basistens Josh Gilberts smörsång, som får den hårda musiken att låta nästan mesig genom att han bara öppnar munnen. Dessutom är det aldrig acceptabelt att inte spela An Ocean Between Us, som utom tävlan är bandets bästa låt.
Trots ljudproblemen upplever jag As I Lay Dyings spelning som trevlig.
Bäst: 94 Hours.
Sämst: Det irriterande dåliga ljudet.

Trivium

Den första gången jag såg Trivium var år 2006, när de agerade förband till giganterna Iron Maiden på Globen. Då imponerade de stort på mig. Sedan dess har Trivium växt till ett band som själva kan sälja ut spelningar och har byggt upp ett rykte som säger att detta är ett bra liveband.
Matt Heafy och hans manskap har dock inte sin karriärs bästa kväll denna afton.
Kvällens spelning på Tyrol är riktigt svårbedömd.
Stundtals, som i inledande låtduon In Waves och Light Like to the Flies är det strålande underhållning, blixtrande teknik och faktiskt riktigt, riktigt bra. I andra spår, som Into the Mouth of Hell We March och Down From the Sky, är det istället riktigt, riktigt trist.
På detta sätt går hela spelningen likt en berg-och-dalbana upp och ner, med tydliga toppar och lika tydliga dalar.
Dessutom kan jag inte låta bli att tycka att Matt Heafys annars suveräna röst låter väldigt trött. Detta märks framförallt under de partier han använder sin growl-röst och knappt får fram ett ljud. Hans gitarrspel är däremot helt oklanderligt, vilket även gäller för gitarrkollegan Corey Beaulieu.
Stora stunder är konserten en show i gitarrteknik. Corey hanterar sina sångpartier galant, framförallt i kvällens höjdpunkt Ember to Inferno.
Black fungerar riktigt bra denna kväll och lyckas dessutom lyfta publikens insats ett helt snäpp. Andra låtar som denna kväll är utmärkta är A Gunshot to the Head of Trepidation, magnifika Built to Fall och förstås (inte helt otippat) Pull Harder on the Strings of Your Martyr. Dying in Your Arms hade dock alla klarat sig bättre utan.
Det är en svajig spelning, som inte riktigt hittar någon fast mark under de 90 minuter som Trivium ångar på.
Att Trivium, likt As I Lay Dying, får bråka med ljudet gör det hela inte bättre. Jag vet att Trivium kan mycket bättre än det som de visade denna kväll.
Bäst: Ember To Inferno.
Sämst: Dying In Your Arms. Alltid Dying In Your Arms.

LIVE: Trivium • As I Lay Dying at Tyrol • Stockholm

As I Lay Dying

As I Lay Dying is a live act that has always managed to impress me, many hours of rehearsal must be the trick for this bands ability to play so incredibly tight. This evening, however, starts off with big problems in the sound department, Nick Hipas melodies sometimes disappear and the only thing we hear from the guitars on stage is Phil Sgrossos rhythm guitar.
The band has The Incredible Hulk himself on vocals in the shape of the sovereign Tim Lambesis. Besides his voice the strength in his arms would be enough to lead the audience exactly where he pleases – with only minimal hand movement.
From the start, this San Diego based band has the Swedish audience with them and because of their somewhat short stage time (approximately 45 minutes) they focus on the more famous songs. 94 Hours is always a crowd favorite and during the last song, The Sound of Truth, the entire audience sings every word with the band.
Within Destruction is a personal favorite that is always welcome in this groups setlist.
The only songs that did not really sit well with me came off As I Lay Dying’s last two releases.
What holds the band back in my eyes is Josh Gilbert’s buttery vocals, he makes the music lukewarm by just opening his mouth. But my biggest issue tonight, it is never acceptable to leave out An Ocean Between Us, which is easily the band’s best song.
Despite sound problems, As I Lay Dying delivered a nice gig.
Best: 94 Hours.
Worst: That annoying sound.

Trivium

The first time I saw Trivium was in 2006, when they warmed up The Globe for Iron Maiden. Since then, Trivium has grown into a band that have their own headlining tours and has built up a reputation as a great live band.
Matt Heafy and his band mates did not have their best night this evening.
Tonight’s gig at Tyrol is really uneven.
Sometimes, as in the initial In Waves and Like Light To The Flies it’s brilliant entertainment, blazing technique and actually really, really good. In other tracks, Into the Mouth of Hell We March and Down From the Sky, it is the opposite and really, really boring.
The gig is high and low, with distinct peaks and valleys as clear.
Also, I can not help thinking that Matt Heafy’s otherwise superb voice sounds very tired. This is particularly noticeable in the way he uses his growl, you can almost not hear anything. His guitar playing is completely impeccable, so is Corey Beaulieu’s who also manage his vocal parts superbly, especially in the highlight of the evening, Ember to Inferno.
Black works really well tonight and also manages to lift the audience’s response a bit. Other songs that is excellent this evening is A Gunshot to the Head of trepidation, magnificent Built to Fall and of course (not entirely unexpected) Pull Harder on the Strings of Your Martyr. Dying in Your Arms would not have been missed if it had taken the night off.
Trivium delivers a wobbly gig, that did not really find any solid ground during the 90 minutes they were playing.
Just like in As I Lay Dying’s case the sound mess upp Trivium’s show. I know that Trivium can be a lot better than what they showed tonight.
Best: Ember To Inferno.
Worst: Dying In Your Arms.
