2/11 – 2012
Ikväll är det premiärturné för Katatonia,en turné som går under namnet Dead Ends Of Europe 2012. Namnet kommer från deras nionde album Dead End Kings, som släpptes i augusti. Har du ännu inte lyssnat på den så kan jag rekommendera dig att göra det, en länk till skivan på Spotify finns längre ner på sidan.
Katatonia äntrar scenen och kör igång första låten The Parting, vilket är öppningsspåret på Dead End Kings. De går sedan in i den sköna Buildings och det är härligt att ta del utav deras drömlika samt eleganta scenshow, som består av alltför mycket rök och färger, i sann doom-inspirerad goth metal-anda.
Vi bjuds på låtar från nya albumet Dead End Kings, men även publikfavoriter som Deliberation, My Twin och old school-låtarna Deadhouse och Teargas.
July får hela publiken att gunga, medan de sjunger med i vartenda ord och Day And Then The Shades har ett öppningsriff som kan orsaka seriösa nackskador tack vare för mycket headbangande. Allt som allt visar det sig att showen är hypnotisk och tillräckligt hård för att tillfredsställa en lättillgänglig publik.
Jonas Renkses röst är ren, stark och väldigt sympatisk när han sjunger fram orden, gömd bakom ett massivt lager av svart hår. Rösten är som starkast under de fantastiska låtarna Teargas och Sweet Nurse.
De få stunder man får se hans ansikte skiner ett leende på hans läppar.
Tillsammans med Anders Nyström, fångar Per ”Sodomizer” Eriksson (även medlem i Bloodbath) albumens rika nyanser med sina temposkiftande riff och melodier. De är även båda två väldigt bra bakgrunssångare och lyckas förstärka Renkses röst.
Daniel Liljekvist sätter ett skönt groove med sitt trumspel, som Niklas Sandin bygger vidare på med sin bas.
Musiken är uppbyggd på flera olika lager, allt från riffen till trumspelet. Allt är genomtänkt och inget lämnas åt slumpen, vilket förvisso är synd då det inte ges rum för improvisation.
Även om variationen bland låtarna är rik slår det mig under spelningens gång att Katatonia inte är världens roligaste band att titta på.
De är väldigt musikaliska, men det finns ändå en viss trötthet och passivitet som smittar av sig på publiken en gång för mycket.
Mellansnacket uteblir, låtarna går in i varandra och ibland känns det bara som att de går på rutin. Jag drömmer mig bort utanför KB.
Jag hade gärna sett att Katatonia kortat ner sin långa låtlista, bestående utav 20 låtar, till max 15 stycken. Å andra sidan kan jag ha fel, då merparten av publiken verkade vara väldigt nöjd efter att bandet lämnat scenen för andra gången.
Vi har alla våra individuella åsikter, min är att Katatonia var mystiskt mysiga första halvan av spelningen, medan andra halvan var mer som ett långt sömnpiller som ändå hade sina toppar.

REVIEW: Katationa LIVE at KB • Malmö
2/11 – 2012
Tonight is the premiere tour for Katatonia which goes under the name Dead End Of Europe 2012th.
The name comes from their ninth album, Dead End Kings, released in August. If you haven’t listened to it, I can recommend you to do so and a link to Spotify can be found further down on this page.
Katatonia enters the stage and kicks off the first song The Parting, which is the opening track to Dead End Kings. They then go into the beautiful Buildings, it’s great to experience their dreamlike and elegant stage show, consisting of too much smoke and colors, it all creates the perfect atmosphere for Katatonias true, doom inspired goth metal.
We are treated with songs from the new album Dead End Kings, but also favorites such as Deliberation, My Twin and old-school Katatonia songs Deadhouse and Teargas.
July gets the entire audience to sway as they sing every word, and Day And Then The Shades has an opening riff that might lead to a serious neck injury after too much headbanging.
All in all, the show is hypnotic and heavy enough to satisfy an accessible audience.
Jonas Renkse’s voice is pure, strong and very likeable, he sings the words while hiding behind a massive layer of black hair.
The voice is at its strongest during the amazing songs Teargas and Sweet Nurse. The few moments that we get to see his face, there’s a smile on his lips.
Anders Nyström and Per ”Sodomizer” Eriksson (also a member of Bloodbath) capture the rich nuances of the albums with
their tempo shifting riffs and melodies. Both of them are very good background singers and they succeed in strengthening Renkse’s voice.
Daniel Liljekvist puts a nice groove to the music with his drums, Niklas Sandin adds another layer of sound with his bass.
The music is made up of several different layers, from the riffs to the drum playing. Everything is thought out and nothing is left to chance, which is a shame as there is no room for improvisation.
Although the variation among the songs is rich, it strikes me during the show that Katatonia is not the most entertaining band to watch. They are very talented musically, but there is a certain fatigue and passivity that rubs off on the audience too often. The songs go into each other and sometimes it feels just like they are going through the motions.
I would have liked it if Katatonia had shortened their long setlist, from 20 songs to a maximum of 15 songs. On the other hand I may be wrong, since most of the audience members seem very happy after the band leaves the stage for the second time.
We all have our individual opinions, mine is that Katatonia was mysterious and cozy during the first half of the show. The second half was more like a sleeping pill, that still had it’s peaks.
